If you’ve never been to our practice before, here are two easy routes you could take, using the Burke Centre Library as a starting point:
- Head southeast on Fairfax County Pkwy, then turn left onto Burke Lake Rd. Continue for 3.4 miles, then turn left onto Rolling Rd. After you pass the grocery store and the Exxon on your right, turn left onto Lyngate Ct. Go past two buildings, then turn right into our parking lot. We’re at 5200-A Lyngate Ct.
- Instead, you could take Fairfax County Pkwy and turn off sooner, onto Roberts Pkwy. Continue for 1.5 miles, then turn right onto Guinea Rd. After a few bends, turn right onto Braddock Rd. Turn right onto Rolling Rd, then take the first right turn onto Lyngate Ct, and we’re in the third building on the right!
How Much Local History Do You Know?
Burke, Virginia is a community rich in history, named after Silas Burke (1796–1854), a prominent 19th-century farmer, merchant, and civic leader. In the 1820s, Burke built a home on a hill overlooking Pohick Creek, and his influence extended beyond his landownership — he served as a judge, sheriff, and held leadership roles with the Fairfax Agricultural Society and the Orange and Alexandria Railroad Company. When the railroad was constructed in the late 1840s, the station at the base of his property was named “Burke’s Station,” and the surrounding area began to grow as a community hub.
During the Civil War, Burke’s Station played a strategic role, garrisoned by Union forces and targeted in a Confederate raid led by General J.E.B. Stuart in 1862. Stuart famously sent a sarcastic telegram to a Union general complaining about the poor quality of mules he had confiscated during the raid. The area saw several other skirmishes during the war, and its original railroad station still stands today, rotated from its original placement but preserved as a piece of local history.
In the early 20th century, Burke gained renewed attention when Henry C. Copperthite purchased land to build a racetrack and entertainment destination. Known as the “King of Pie” for his massive pie factory in Washington, D.C., Copperthite turned Burke into a vibrant summer getaway, complete with horse racing, boxing matches, and festivals that attracted visitors from across the region. His development efforts included hotels, stables, and even the first telephones in Burke. Though the area remained mostly rural until after World War I, Burke began to transform into a suburban community in the 1960s. Today, neighborhoods like Burke Centre and landmarks such as Burke Lake Park offer a blend of historic charm and modern living, honoring the town’s legacy while embracing its future.
